Frequently asked questions
Wilhelmsen provides a comprehensive range of products and services to the maritime and offshore industries. This includes supplying vessel necessities like cleaning chemicals, ropes, and welding equipment. We also offer digital services designed to enhance safety, reduce fuel consumption, and lower emissions. Additionally, we assist vessels with organizing port calls and accessing various port services.
Wilhelmsen operates in 53 countries and serves over 2,200 ports worldwide. Our global network includes nearly 13,000 crew members operating various types of vessels and approximately 6,000 employees working in offices, warehouses, and supply bases. This extensive presence makes us one of the largest maritime networks in the world.
Founded in 1861, Wilhelmsen has been a key player in the maritime industry for over 160 years. We started with sailing vessels, transitioned through steam and diesel power, and overcame the challenges of two world wars. After World War II, we expanded our fleet and became one of the leading shipping companies globally. In the 1970s, we specialised in car and rolling cargo transport, which led to the creation of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics in 1999. In 2005, we established Wilhelmsen Maritime Services to broaden our footprint in the maritime sector.
While we share historical ties, partial ownership and work closely together in various ways, Wilhelmsen group and Wallenius Wilhelmsen are separate entities. In 2017, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics underwent a significant transformation. The company ditched “Logistics” and was renamed Wallenius Wilhelmsen after a merger between Wilhelmsen entity Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA from Norway and Soya Group entity Wallenius Lines from Sweden. Both Wilhelmsen and our Swedish partner are cornerstone shareholders with a 38% stake each, and the remaining shares are traded publicly.
Launched in 2021, the New Energy segment focuses on contributing to the energy transition within the maritime industry. Including NorSea Group, now majority-owned by Wilhelmsen, this segment consists of companies that develop digital services to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, aim to eliminate fossil fuels in maritime operations, and provide crucial infrastructure for new energy value chains like offshore wind.
Wilhelmsen group is organised into three main business segments:
- Maritime Services: Offers maritime products and services, including vessel necessities, safety products, insurance, and chemicals.
- New Energy: Portfolio of companies including NorSea Group, alongside investments like Edda Wind, Reach Subsea, and Wilhelmsen digital pioneer company Raa Labs. The segment focuses on offshore wind, remote solutions, and digital innovation.
- Strategic Holdings and Investments: Holds shareholdings in Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the Korean logistics company Hyundai Glovis, and a dedicated military logistics company.
Our vision, "Shaping the maritime industry," reflects our commitment to innovation and progress. We push boundaries by developing new products and services, investing in digital solutions, and actively contributing to the energy transition. By continuously developing our people, organization, and culture, we aim to achieve our results the right way and with the best talent in the industry.
